BLOG 6 - Car insurance to rise by 11% for young women after European ruling

Due to European rules young women face an 11% rise in the cost of their car insurance by the end of 2012. The reason behind this rise is that European rules ban pricing according to gender. Since young women motorists are at relatively low risk of an accident, they might see their insurance costs rise with about £400 annually. This is more than any other group. Young men, on the other hand, are likely to get cheaper premiums, even though they are generally high risk drivers. The continuing discussion in Europe focuses now on whether the rules should be extended to cover pricing on the basis of age and disability. If so, it could increase the insurance costs for the majority of people.

Although, it seems like European rules provide against discrimination, it in fact does discriminate now. Insurance costs are based on statistics and it happens to be that young men in general are more reckless and therefore more likely to be involved in an accident than. Let’s say middle-aged women. Instead of making them – those who are responsible – pay for their actions, everyone has to pay for it now. So, European rulers decided to ban pricing according to gender to provide against discrimination, but I am not so sure if it really fair.
